In a celebration of youthful talent and the spirit of cricket, the SCCWC INDIA 2023 (Street Child Cricket World Cup) has officially commenced. Organized by Aisha Nazia, this unique cricket tournament promises thrilling matches, camaraderie, and a platform for street children from across the globe to showcase their cricketing prowess. The tournament is set to take place from September 25th to September 30th, 2023, at the Amir Mahal Ground in Chennai, India, featuring 19 teams from various nations.
The SCCWC INDIA 2023 brings together an eclectic mix of teams, including the India Crocodiles, India Lions, India Cats, India Cobras, India Panthers, and India Wolves, all representing different regions of India. Joining them on the field are international teams from England, Bangladesh, Burundi, Hungary, Nepal, Mauritius, Mexico, Rawanda, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Uganda, and Zimbabwe.
This tournament showcases Street20 Cricket, a condensed and exciting version of Twenty20 cricket that has been making waves in the world of cricket. Street20 Cricket is designed to break down barriers to participation and make the game accessible to everyone. Played with a tennis ball wrapped in tape, known as a 'Tapeball,' Street20 Cricket eliminates the need for expensive equipment and can be played almost anywhere, making it an all-weather sport.
One unique feature of Street20 Cricket is that each match consists of six players, with an equal number of boys and girls on each side. The games are fast-paced, typically lasting 20 minutes, and offer a dynamic and inclusive experience for all participants.
Street20 Cricket follows a set of generic rules to ensure fairness and equal participation:
The 19 teams participating in SCCWC INDIA 2023 will be divided into three groups: A, B, and C. The matches will be held on three pitches, with Pitch C considered the main pitch. The tournament comprises group stage matches and knockout stages, culminating in the finals on Pitch C.
A dedicated practice session was held on September 25th, 2023, to prepare the teams for the competition. The session was led by Olivia Rae, providing teams with an opportunity to fine-tune their skills.
